The ranges below reflect the total prices common in Switzerland including installation – equipment, materials, fitting and commissioning together.

What really moves the price

In our experience the equipment itself often accounts for less than half the bill. The larger part is determined by the installation work:

Pipe routing and distance

The further apart the indoor and outdoor units are, the more refrigerant line, cable and insulation are needed – and the more work the routing takes. Units placed back to back on the same wall are considerably cheaper than a run that has to pass through several rooms or across two floors.

Access to the outdoor unit

An outdoor unit on a ground-floor balcony is straightforward. If it has to go on a facade on the third floor, a lift platform or scaffolding may be required – an item that shows up clearly in the total.

Number of indoor units

With multisplit systems, each additional indoor unit costs not only the unit itself but also its own pipe run and extra installation time.

Equipment quality and efficiency

Between a basic unit and a highly efficient branded one with quiet operation, good filtration and app control there can be several thousand francs. The more efficient system recovers part of that through lower running costs – how quickly depends on how much you actually cool.

Electrical connection and condensate

Sometimes a dedicated circuit is needed; sometimes the condensate has to be removed by a pump because there is no fall to a drain. Both are smaller but real items.

Permit fees

Depending on the municipality, fees for a notification or building application apply and can quickly amount to several hundred francs. More on this in our guide to permits and regulations.

Running costs

Besides the one-off investment, plan for two recurring items:

• Electricity – how much depends on unit size, efficiency class, the room temperature you want and how long you run it. A modern inverter system is considerably more economical than an older on/off unit because it adjusts its output continuously instead of repeatedly starting at full power.
• Servicing – regular checks and cleaning. This is not busywork: a clogged filter or a slow refrigerant loss reduces output and pushes up consumption, often before you notice anything.

How to recognise a proper quotation

Very cheap offers online often are not comparing the same thing. Check that these points are explicitly included:

• Equipment with a specific model designation and cooling capacity – not just „split unit“
• Wall penetration and sealing
• Refrigerant lines, insulation and charging
• Electrical connection
• Condensate drainage
• Fixing of the outdoor unit including brackets or base
• Commissioning, leak testing and handover instruction
• Disposal of packaging material
• A statement of whether scaffolding or a lift platform is included

If one of these is missing, the price is not wrong – but it is not complete. Additional charges then become likely.
