In Switzerland a monosplit system for one room typically comes to roughly CHF 2,500 to 6,000 including installation. Multisplit systems for several rooms sit at around CHF 6,000 to 15,000.
The actual price depends heavily on pipe length, how accessible the outdoor unit is, and the quality of the equipment. Only a quote after a site visit is binding. Details in our guide to costs.
Portable monobloc units generally need no permit. Permanently installed split systems with an outdoor unit are a different matter and are relevant under building law.
In the canton of Aargau, a notification to the municipality is often enough in residential zones; in core and conservation zones, or where the outdoor unit is clearly visible, a building application is required. In the canton of Zurich an outdoor unit on the facade usually requires a permit, and an energy compliance certificate is required as well.

For domestic systems we recommend servicing once a year, ideally in spring before the cooling season. With heavy use, in commercial premises or in dusty surroundings, a shorter interval can make sense.
You should also clean the filters yourself from time to time – it takes a few minutes and has a direct effect on air quality and power consumption.
Modern indoor units are very quiet in normal operation and barely noticeable in night mode.
What matters for the neighbours is the outdoor unit. The Swiss Noise Abatement Ordinance applies here, and its limits must be met, particularly at night. Position and orientation are therefore not simply a matter of taste – we always look at this during the site visit.
Yes. Most modern split systems are heat pumps and can be run in reverse. In spring and autumn this is often more efficient than the existing heating.
As the sole heating through a Swiss winter it usually will not be enough – but as a supplement it is very useful and saves on heating costs.
A monosplit system is usually installed and running within one working day. Multisplit systems with several indoor units or demanding pipe routing can take two to three days.

With professional installation and regular servicing, 12 to 15 years is normal, often longer.
What decides it is clean installation, tight refrigerant lines and regular care. A neglected system loses capacity earlier and uses more electricity – often without it being immediately obvious.
Only with the written consent of your landlord. A wall penetration and a unit on the facade are an intervention in the building fabric.
Agree at the same time whether the system may stay when you move out or has to be removed – having that in writing is better for both sides.
With a monosplit system, one outdoor unit serves exactly one indoor unit, so one room.
With a multisplit system, several indoor units run from a single outdoor unit. That saves space on the facade and looks tidier when several rooms are to be cooled. An overview of the systems is on Services and Products.
